Neurofeedback

What is Neurofeedback?

Neurofeedback, or EEG (electroencephalogram) biofeedback, is a therapeutic technique that provides real-time feedback on brainwave activity through a computer-based program. This intervention uses auditory or visual signals to help individuals become more aware of their mental states and encourage conscious adjustments in their cognitive patterns. The idea is that by recognizing and modifying specific brainwave patterns, individuals can enhance their brain’s functioning, potentially alleviating symptoms associated with neurological or mental health conditions.

As a form of biofeedback, neurofeedback falls under a broader category of therapies that provide real-time data about physiological processes, such as heart rate or blood pressure, to help individuals consciously regulate bodily functions. Neurofeedback, however, specifically targets brain activity to promote cognitive self-regulation.

What to Expect During Neurofeedback Therapy

Neurofeedback therapy typically involves regular sessions, ranging from 30 to 60 minutes, depending on individual needs. The number of sessions required varies; some clients may experience significant benefits after a few sessions, while others may require more prolonged treatment.

Upon arrival, the client will be seated comfortably, and the clinician will place electrodes on their scalp, often secured with a cap or band. These electrodes monitor and transmit the client’s brainwave activity to a computer program, allowing for real-time analysis.

Individual Therapy & Counselling

During the session, the client may engage with visual or auditory stimuli, such as watching graphics on a computer screen or listening to music. Meanwhile, the clinician observes and monitors the brainwave patterns on a screen, ensuring the therapy is progressing effectively. The neurofeedback system provides immediate, real-time feedback through visual and auditory cues designed to encourage the brain to move towards more optimal and regulated patterns of activity.

As clients progress through the sessions, they may begin to notice subtle shifts in their mental and emotional states, such as improvements in mood, reduced stress, enhanced sleep quality, or increased mental clarity.

Neurofeedback is a non-invasive procedure conducted in a clinical setting, where the individual remains fully awake, conscious, and alert throughout the process. No medication or sedation is involved, and clients are able to resume their daily activities immediately following the session.

Benefits of Neurofeedback

  • Reduce symptoms of mental health conditions such as anxiety and depression
  • Increase the brain’s ability to self-regulate
  • Improve attention and focus
  • Improve emotional stability
  • Lessen PTSD symptoms
  • Manage stress
  • Improved memory and recall ability
  • Better sleep patterns
  • Regulate and improve mood
  • Increase quality of life

How Does Neurofeedback Work?

Neurofeedback works by monitoring brain activity and reinforcing positive patterns of functioning. A quantitative EEG (qEEG) is utilized to measure brainwave activity and identify areas where the brain may not be functioning optimally.

During the session, when the brain is operating within the desired range, the images on the screen will be clear, and the music will be audible. If the brain deviates from the ideal state, the images and music will begin to fade, encouraging the brain to self-correct in search of the reward. This process motivates the brain to retrain itself to function in a more balanced and efficient way.

Individual Therapy & Counselling
Neurofeedback trains the brain’s ability to self-regulate by feeding back information on selected EEG rhythms related to regulation.

An EEG is performed at the start of each session to track the brain’s progress and identify which areas still need attention in future sessions.

Neurofeedback is most effective when combined with other therapeutic approaches, offering benefits for a variety of conditions. In some cases, the results can be quite remarkable.
