General FAQ

Some of the frequently asked questions answered.
What is a Registered Psychotherapist?

A Registered Psychotherapist (RP) is a licensed mental health professional trained to provide psychotherapy. They meet strict standards in education, clinical training, and ethics, and are qualified to assess and treat a range of emotional and psychological concerns. RPs are regulated by professional bodies such as the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO) and the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association (CCPA).

What is the difference between a Registered Psychotherapist and Qualifying Psychotherapist?

A Registered Psychotherapist (RP) has completed all training and licensing requirements.

A Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying) has completed the required education and is qualified to provide therapy while completing final licensing requirements. They practice under the supervision of a Registered Psychotherapist.

Both are trained and qualified to provide psychotherapy services.

How many therapy sessions will I need?
The number of sessions depends on your goals for therapy, types of interventions, and your presenting concern. Sessions are typically booked once every two weeks but that may vary depending on your financial situation and schedule.
What are your hours and how do I make an appointment?
We offer daytime and evening sessions from Monday to Saturday. Please contact us by phone or email to book your preferred date and time.
What is your cancellation policy?
At YourTherapist Psychotherapy and Counselling, we reserve a special time for your session. If you need to cancel, we require at least 24 hours notice.
How long are sessions?
Introductory sessions are 15 minutes in length. Full sessions are typically 50 minutes, though this may vary depending on the specific service provided.
Is there a cancellation fee?
Cancellations are required at least 24 hours in advance of your appointment. Late cancellations or missed appointments may be subject to a fee.
Do you accept insurance coverage?

We are listed as a provider with Blue Cross, Green Shield, Manulife, WSIB, IFHP, and many other insurance companies. We accept credit card, e transfer, and cash payments.

We recommend contacting your insurance provider directly to confirm your coverage eligibility.

If you are eligible and would like us to keep your information on file or arrange direct billing where applicable, please email your insurance details at your convenience.

What is an introductory consultation session?

We offer a complimentary 15-minute phone or video consultation to assist you in beginning your therapeutic journey. This is an opportunity to discuss your goals, concerns, and what brings you to therapy.

You may schedule a consultation with our Clinic Director, who can assess your specific needs and recommend a suitable therapist. Alternatively, you may book a session directly with a therapist of your choice to ensure they are the right fit for you.

Is confidentiality maintained?

Yes, confidentiality is strictly maintained across all services in accordance with professional and legal standards. Confidentiality is discussed before each service to ensure all parties understand. Information shared in therapy is private, with exceptions only in situations involving risk of harm or where disclosure is required by law.

How is consent obtained for each service?
Consent is obtained for each service through a dedicated consent form tailored to its specific requirements.
Do you offer in person or virtual services?

We offer both in-person and online therapy options to suit your needs. Our offices are located in Downtown Ottawa, Orléans, and Kingston. Additionally, we provide virtual therapy services to clients across Ontario.

Please note that certain sessions may be restricted to specific locations or formats (in-person or virtual). We recommend reviewing our “Services” page to confirm the availability for your specific needs.

What are the benefits of online therapy?
Benefits to online counselling include accessibility, convenience, and affordability. If you are travelling, or live in a rural or remote area, online counselling is available as long as you have access to the internet. Being able to receive professional counselling and therapy from the comforts of your own home or office and not needing to pay for childcare, gas, or parking are also benefits to online counselling. However, many clients prefer to interact with their therapist in-person. Only you can determine whether in-person or online therapy is better for you.
How do I attend my virtual session?

All sessions are held through our secure platform Owl. To attend online sessions, book additional appointments, or view your schedule, please use the client portal: https://oab.owlpractice.ca/yourtherapist
