Britt Mari Sykes-Registered Psychotherapist

Britt-Mari Sykes, PhD

Britt-Mari Sykes PhD is a Career Counsellor, founder of CANVAS Career Counselling, and an independent contractor with YourTherapist Psychotherapy and Counselling. She is a member of Career Professionals of Canada and is a certified Career Strategist (CCS), Work-Life Strategist (CWS), Employment Strategist (CES), Interview Strategist (CIS), and Résumé Strategist (CRS).

Based in Ottawa, Britt-Mari works with clients across Canada and the United States. She earned her Ph.D. from the University of Ottawa and specializes in existential and experiential psychotherapies. Britt-Mari is the author of Questioning Psychological Health and Well-Being, a historical and contemporary examination of the meaning of psychological health and development. She is currently working on her second book: a collection of essays on the meaning of career and our relationship with work from an existential career counselling perspective.

Britt-Mari is committed to life-long learning and professional development, regularly participating in workshops and certificate programs on the theory and practice of Existential Analysis, Trauma-Informed Care and Narrative Therapy. Before devoting her time to private practice, Britt-Mari guest lectured extensively in classrooms and at conferences in Canada, the USA, and Europe on the history of existential psychology, the theory of Existential Analysis, meaningful and fulfilling living, and developing meaningful careers. She served on panels at international conferences on human development, ethics in everyday life, and the value of work.

Active in community engagement, Britt-Mari volunteers as a Life Path Coach, Roundtable and Workshop Facilitator with the Discover Year program. For 3 years, she served as a Family Advisor and committee member on a variety of mental health projects/initiatives at CHEO (Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario) and The Knowledge Institute on Child and Youth Mental Health and Addictions.
