Child and Youth Mental Health

Compassionate support for kids, teens, and families

Veterans Mental Health Care

Our Child & Youth Mental Health services provide developmentally appropriate support for children, adolescents, young adults, and families who are facing emotional, behavioural, or life-stage challenges. Growing up comes with stress, transitions, and big feelings, and many children and teens need a safe place to talk, learn coping skills, and build confidence.

Whether your child is struggling with anxiety, low mood, self-esteem, body image concerns, school stress, or difficulty managing emotions, our team is here to help with compassionate, evidence-based support.

Youth Therapy

Why child and youth therapy helps

Children and youth do not always have the words to explain what they are feeling. They may show distress through behaviour, avoidance, irritability, shutdown, or changes in school performance. Therapy gives them a supportive space to express themselves, learn healthy coping tools, and better understand their emotions.

We also work closely with parents and caregivers because family support plays a major role in helping children thrive. Our goal is to support the whole system, not just the individual child.

Concerns we commonly support

We commonly help children, youth, and families with:
  • Anxiety and worry
  • Depression and low mood
  • Stress and overwhelm
  • Life transitions and adjustment
  • Self-esteem concerns
  • Body image issues
  • Social challenges
  • Emotional regulation difficulties
  • School-related stress
  • Family communication concerns
  • Coping skills development

What to expect

The first session is usually about getting to know your child or teen, learning about the concern, and understanding what support is most appropriate. We may discuss family history, school stress, emotional patterns, routines, or recent changes that could be contributing to difficulties. From there, we create a plan that supports both the child and the family with clear, manageable next steps.

Our approach to care

Every child is different, so therapy should be flexible, respectful, and age-appropriate. We use approaches that fit the child’s developmental stage and the family’s goals. For younger children, play therapy may be especially helpful. For youth and young adults, therapy may focus more on emotional expression, thought patterns, coping strategies, identity, and communication.
Treatment may include:
  • Person-centred therapy
  • Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT)
  • Biopsychosocial approaches
  • Motivational interviewing
  • Play therapy
  • Family-centred support when helpful
